The study of the Gothic windows from the Church at Auvers-sur-Oise shows a really sophisticated understanding of light and architectural weight. “Artist at Work” Capturing the Classics: A Masterclass in Pastel There is no better way to understand the masters than to look through their eyes. Today in the studio, we are celebrating this incredible pastel study of the Church at Auvers. By focusing on the intricate details of the windows and the play of light on the stone, my student has captured the soul of the architecture that once inspired Van Gogh himself. The soft texture of the pastels perfectly mimics the weathered stone of this historic French landmark. The Inspiration From Auvers to the Studio In 1890, Vincent van Gogh immortalized the Church at Auvers-sur-Oise with his swirling, emotional brushwork. Today, we’re seeing a new perspective ’m so proud to share this stunning pastel work. While Vincent focused on the movement of the sky and the landscape, this piece dives deep into the structure and the “face” of the church. The depth achieved in the windows is truly remarkable—a beautiful bridge between art history and modern talent.
